US To Deploy ‘World’s 1st Carrier-Based Unmanned Aircraft’ To Japan; Aims To Keep China Away From Taiwan<br /><br />The US Navy intends to replace the USS Ronald Reagan, currently stationed in Japan and serving as the service’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier, with the USS George Washington by 2025.<br /><br />According to reports, USS George Washington, which the USS Reagan replaced in 2015, is expected to be redeployed to Yokosuka with upgraded unmanned refueling capabilities to equip the US forces to repel a possible Chinese invasion of Taiwan.<br /><br />Lt. Brian Cunningham, a spokesman for the US Pacific Fleet, who spoke to Nikkei Asia, said that plans are being made to replace the forward-deployed carrier. He continued that the details of the movement cannot be disclosed until proper coordination has been secured.<br /><br />The USS George Washington aircraft carrier was deployed at Yokosuka for seven years before the USS Ronald Reagan took its position in 2015. The carrier has been in Virginia for over five and a half years for a midlife repair and refueling procedure.<br /><br />The vessel is being modified as a part of the process to deploy the Boeing MQ-25A Stingray. The Stingray is the world’s first operational carrier-based unmanned aircraft. <br /><br />It offers aerial refueling and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities that improve the capacity and adaptability of the Carrier Air Wing (CVW) and Carrier Strike Group (CSG). <br /><br />The capability of aerial refueling will significantly increase the range of the carrier air wing. <br /><br />This will be crucial in combating China’s anti-access/area denial strategy, which is a key component of its strategy against the US in the event of a future invasion of Taiwan. It involves using various missiles to block US Navy from entering waters near China’s coastlines.<br /><br />Chinese medium-range ballistic missiles, like the DF-21, sometimes known as the “carrier killer,” can destroy an aircraft carrier if they are within striking distance. <br /><br />In such a combat scenario, the carriers must operate from a considerable distance. The MQ-25A will allow George Washington to dispatch its carrier wing to hostile regions from a greater distance.<br /><br />The latest development comes days after the USS Barry, a guided-missile destroyer, left Yokosuka, Japan, and the USS Shoup, a destroyer, took over its responsibilities.<br /><br />Furthermore, the US Air Force also decided to withdraw its entire fleet of F-15C/D fighter jets from Japan late last year. On November 4, it dispatched a small number of F-22 Raptors to Okinawa to begin a six-month rotation.<br /><br />Why Is The USS Ronald Reagan Being Replaced?<br />The US defense budget for the fiscal year 2019 included a provision limiting the time frame that navy warships might be deployed overseas. This regulation was implemented in response to two collisions involving destroyers based in Yokosuka in 2017. <br />-<br />Congress mandated in the 2019 defense budget that Aircraft carriers, amphibious ships, cruisers, destroyers, frigates, and littoral combat ships should not be deployed in the forward position for more than ten years. <br /><br />Under this regulation, the United States Navy intends to replace Ronald Reagan before the 10-year mark. The mainstay of America’s naval power, aircraft carriers have crews of over 5,000 and can accommodate up to 90 aircraft. <br /><br />The USS George Washington’s compartments and structure were authorized to be modified by the US Navy as part of the fiscal 2019 military budget.<br /><br />The decision was taken with the expectation that the ship would return to Yokosuka after being overhauled to assist in deploying the MQ-25. The US Navy intends to deploy MQ-25s with all Nimitz and Ford-class carriers.

US Deploys F-22 Raptors From Japan To Mariana Islands As USAF Trains For Battle In Contested Environment<br /><br />For the first time, an unspecified number of F-22 fighters from the 525th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron at Kadena Air Base in Japan have been stationed in the Northern Mariana Islands, a strategically important location close to China.<br /><br />The Raptors are positioned there to participate in Exercise Agile Reaper 23-1 (AR 23-1). The information regarding the deployment was published on the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service website on March 1. <br /><br />F-22 Raptors will conduct sorties during the seven-day exercise from locations within the Northern Mariana Islands, the statement said. Jammer, the 525th EFS commander, said, “This is the first time F-22s have ever been on this island.”<br /><br />The US Air Force is gathering information and developing tactics, techniques, and procedures while going through various training scenarios to educate better how the service fly, fight and win in a modern, contested environment.<br /><br />Exercise Agile Reaper 23-1 (AR 23-1) was launched on March 1 in Guam and Tinian (a part of the Northern Mariana island chain) by the 3rd Air Expeditionary Wing from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.<br /><br />It is an effort by the 3rd AEW to practice capabilities in an operationally relevant environment, practice Agile Combat Employment, and offer air dominance, global mobility, and command and control in the Indo-Pacific region.<br /><br />Col. Kevin “Jinx” Jamieson, the 3rd Air Expeditionary Wing commander, said the exercise’s primary goal is to evaluate the team’s expeditionary abilities in a simulated, contested, degraded, and operationally constrained environment.<br /><br />During this event, maintenance staff and aircrew from the 525th EFS function out of Tinian while airlift and refueling aircraft support activities are conducted from Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, and Kadena Air Base, Japan.<br /><br />On November 4, the US Air Force transferred F-22A fighter aircraft to the Kadena Air Base, Japan. That being said, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands serve as well-defended strategic sites necessary for strategic movement into and throughout the INDO-PACOM region. <br /><br />The USAF officers believe that the 3rd Wing’s training in an operationally relevant environment will improve the service’s capability and preparedness to protect the US and its allies against any prospective adversary, including China, in the region. <br /><br />Guam And Tinian Are Crucial From A Strategic Perspective<br />Amid escalating hostilities with China, the United States is rapidly growing its presence in the Indo-Pacific region. Guam and Tinian would serve as critical locations for the US military in the event of a conflict. <br /><br />The Mariana Islands, also called the CNMI, are located at the westernmost point of US territory. As such, the group of islands extends into the Pacific Ocean roughly 4,000 miles west of Hawaii.<br /><br />The United States has a sizable military presence on Guam (administratively and geographically a part of the Mariana Islands), including Camp Blaz, a new Marine Corps base. It is a new USMC installation established almost after 75 years and will eventually be home to 5,000 Marines.<br /><br />In recent years, the Marine Corps’ focus has switched to countering threats from China. Marines are constantly positioned in the area to dissuade the Chinese military as a part of the Force Design 2030, the comprehensive overhaul of the service devised amid the increased focus on the Indo-Pacific.

26 suspected Chinese militia, coast guard vessels spotted near Ayungin Shoal — PCG<br /><br />At least 26 suspected Chinese maritime militia and coast guard vessels have been spotted near Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).<br /><br />According to the PCG, photos from its Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) flight confirmed the continued presence of 26 suspected Chinese maritime militia and Chinese Coast Guard within the country’s maritime domain.<br /><br />The Ayungin Shoal is located some 100 nautical miles off Palawan but is likewise near Mischief Reef, an area in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) reportedly occupied by China.<br /><br />The PCG said they ordered China Coast Guard 5304 to leave the area in response to a Chinese and English radio challenge from the Chinese ship, highlighting that the MDA is being conducted over the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone.<br /><br />GMA News Online has reached out to PCG spokesperson Rear Admiral Armando Balilo for further information.<br />-<br />In a separate statement, the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea (NTF-WPS) said the PCG's Cessna Caravan 2081 flew over Ayungin and Sabina Shoals to observe and conduct radio challenges to Chinese coast guard vessels on Tuesday, February 21.<br /><br />The PCG plane approached 10 nautical miles off Ayungin Shoal and issued a radio challenge over China Coast Guard 5304 to leave the area immediately.<br /><br />However, the Chinese vessel issued an “unclear” radio challenge and maintained its presence in shoal, according to the NTF-WPS.<br /><br />The NTF-WPS said China Coast Guard 5304 maintained a constant close distance of not more than one nautical mile from BRP Sierra Madre.<br /><br />The PCG aircraft also noticed at least four Chinese militia vessels anchored inside the Ayungin Shoal, it said.<br /><br />The PCG pilots relayed the patrol data and observations to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) personnel stationed onboard BRP Sierra Madre (LS-57) at Ayungin Shoal.<br /><br />The NTF-WPS, citing the data of the PCG, said the Chinese coast guard vessel 5205 that pointed the “military-grade” laser light at the BRP Malapascua departed the Kalayaan Island Group en route to Hainan, China.<br />Some members of the PCG had suffered temporary blindness due to the laser.<br /><br />Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian, however, said both the Philippine and Chinese sides should refrain from taking any provocative action in the disputed waters.<br /><br />The Department of Foreign Affairs, Manila, meanwhile, lodged a diplomatic protest against China on the incident.

USAF’s B-52 bombers undertake BTF mission 23-2 in Europe<br />The start of the mission was marked by a flyby involving a B-52 over Tallinn, Estonia.<br /><br />The US Air Force’s (USAF) B-52 Stratofortress long-range heavy bomber aircraft has officially started the routine Bomber Task Force (BTF) mission 23-2 in Europe.<br /><br />This was announced by the Nato Allied Air Command (AIRCOM) on 27 February.<br /><br />The deployed bomber aircraft belong to the 5th Bomb Wing from Minot Air Force Base (AFB) in North Dakota, US.<br /><br />The start of the scheduled mission was marked by a low-approach flyby performed by two of the deployed B-52 aircraft over Tallinn to commemorate Estonia’s Independence Day.<br /><br />The two nations are Nato allies and work in close coordination to safeguard the Baltic States and Europe’s eastern flank.<br /><br />USAF Europe-Air Forces Africa and Nato Allied Air Command commander USAF general James Hecker said: “The US and Estonia are close allies and share a strong partnership based on a common commitment to democracy, human rights and the rule of law.<br /><br />“We remain steadfastly committed to the freedom and sovereignty of Estonia and all our Baltic allies as we deter and defend against any threats to our shared security.”<br /><br />As part of the new BTF mission, the USAF’s B-52 Stratofortress bombers will operate with different allied and partner nations’ forces and fighter jets to bolster their interoperability and cohesion with the allied forces.<br /><br />Deployed bombers will be based at Moron Air Force Base in Spain.<br /><br />The deployment of B-52 planes in Europe will also further strengthen the trans-Atlantic bond between the US and European allies.<br /><br />The USAF’s BTF missions aim to reinforce the country’s National Defense Strategy objectives to demonstrate collective defence capabilities across the globe.<br /><br />This routine operation allows the deployed forces to maintain operational readiness and efficiency while validating the USAF’s ‘always-ready’ global strike ability.

Norway Ponders to Send CV90 Armored Combat Vehicles to Ukraine<br /><br />The Norwegian military is discussing the possibility of providing CV90 infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine. The Norwegian Ministry of Defense and the Defense Staff are communicating on would it be possible to fiind some CV90 IFVs in reserves of the country's armed forces<br />That is according to Norwegian TV2, Ukrinform reports.<br /><br />"Norway is considering donating the CV90 armored multi-role vehicle to Ukraine. The Ministry of Defense asked the Defense Staff to look into whether it is possible to donate a certain number of these IFVs," the report reads.<br /><br />As the media reported citing Norwegian Defense minister Bjorn Arild Gram, the Norwegian government "continuously considers whether Norway should send more weapons/materiel to Ukraine."<br /><br />"We do not comment on these assessments and any ongoing or future contributions. We have a good dialogue with Ukraine and allies about the needs," media cites the minister’s words who convinced that Norway "will support Ukraine for as long as necessary."<br /><br />The CV90 comes in 15 variants and is more than an IFV. Norwegian Armed Forces are among the seven nations’ militaries operating the CV90 and have invested in the platform for many years. BAE Systems recently supported the upgrade of 144 combat vehicles to the newest system with 20 additional CV90 vehicles scheduled for delivery by 2023.

B-1s Join F-22s and S. Korean F-35s, in Latest Bomber Task Force Mission<br /><br />A pair of U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancers and F-22 Raptors flew alongside F-35s from the Republic of Korea on Feb. 1—the third bomber flight near the Korean Peninsula in recent months. The jets then trained Feb. 3 with USAF F-22s, Marine Corps F-35Bs, and ROK F-35s. <br /><br />The B-1s subsequently flew to Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, to kick off another Bomber Task Force deployment.<br /><br />The Republic of Korea Defense Ministry announced the first round of joint air training Feb. 2, saying the aircraft linked up over the Yellow Sea, just west of the Peninsula. The ROK Air Force announced the second round Feb. 3, according to multiple media reports, noting that it also took place over the Yellow Sea. <br /><br />A Pacific Air Forces spokesman confirmed to Air & Space Forces Magazine that the B-1s came from Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., and the F-22s came from Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson. A release from PACAF announced the Bomber Task Force mission.<br /><br />The combined flight marks the first combined air training between the ROK, or South Korean, Air Force and the U.S. Air Force in 2023, though U.S. bombers have become a frequent sight in the skies near South Korea recently. <br /><br />In late December, B-52 Stratofortresses from Barksdale Air Force Base, La., flew alongside American F-22s and ROK F-35s and F-15s around Jeju Island south of the peninsula. And in November, B-1s from Ellsworth flew over the Peninsula for the first time in five years. <br /><br />In both cases, the bombers’ flights represented shows of force shortly after North Korea conducted missile tests. <br /><br />These most recent flights came just a days after Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III visited Seoul and pledged alongside South Korean defense minister Lee Jong-sup to increase the size and scope of joint U.S.-ROK military exercises. Abraham Moreland, assistant director of operations for the 34th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron, said in a statement. “The relationships we have with our Allies in the region are crucial to the security of the Indo-Pacific, and the partnerships we build while out here give our aircrews the critical training and experience necessary to be successful in this environment.”<br /><br />The U.S. missions both reassure South Korea and respond to mounting pressure from North Korea, where Kim Jong Un has stepped up missile tests and recently launched drones over South Korean airspace. <br /><br />With tensions increasing, South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol made waves by saying his country may be forced to either ask the U.S. to redeploy nuclear arms on the peninsula or to develop nuclear weapons of its own. And a recent independent, bipartisan commission recommended the two countries begin “pre-decisional” discussions about what it would take to redeploy tactical nuclear weapons to the region.

Finally: Swedish CV90 Combat Vehicle sent for Ukraine - How Powerful Is Combat Vehicle 90 Hägglunds<br /><br /><br /><br /><br />The Swedish government on Thursday announced it would donate to Ukraine up to 50 CV90 infantry fighting vehicles as well as some of Sweden’s Archer mobile howitzers.<br /><br />It’s the latest in a flurry of arms packages from Ukraine’s NATO allies. Sweden along with Finland last year began the slow process of joining the transatlantic alliance.<br /><br />The weapons Ukraine’s allies in recent months have pledged don’t include a lot of tanks although that soon could change. But they do include a lot of heavily-armed infantry fighting vehicles that, while not tanks, still possess significant anti-armor capability.<br /><br />The United States is sending to Ukraine an initial batch of 50 M-2 fighting vehicles that are battle-proven, long-range tank-killers. The Swedish CV90s, by contrast, are adept at destroying armored vehicles at close range and especially in the woods.<br /><br />The tracked, three-crew CV90, built by Swedish firms Hägglunds and Bofors, weighs up to 37 tons. In its standard version it carries up to eight infantry and packs a 40-millimeter autocannon in an armored turret. “It is one of Sweden's best combat vehicles,” Swedish energy and industry minister Ebba Busch stated.<br /><br />The CV90 is popular in northern Europe. The Swedish army has 500 CV90s in several variants. The armies of Switzerland, Norway, The Netherlands, Finland, Estonia and Denmark also operate CV90s.<br /><br />It’s not hard to see why. The CV90’s designers optimized the vehicle for operations in Scandinavia’s forests. Putin Shocked: a counterattack Ukraine troops using himars caused Russia troops retreat in Kherson<br /><br /><br /><br />Ukrainian officials said Monday that strikes using U.S.-supplied HIMARS weapons in the Russian-occupied city of Kherson overnight were successful and that it could pave the way for a counteroffensive to liberate the region.<br /><br />Ukraine's "Kakhovka" task force credited High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) with assisting its troops in destroying almost all the large bridges in the southern Kherson region.<br /><br />"The situation in the temporarily occupied territory of the Kherson region is extremely difficult.
